From The Gambia to Greatness:
Dr. Ceesay’s Journey
Fatoumata Ceesay, M.D., a name now synonymous with dedication and transformative leadership, is a remarkable figure whose journey from The Gambia to the heart of Milwaukee is nothing short of inspiring. As the second board president of the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition (MMWC), Ceesay has stepped into a role of immense responsibility with a passion and commitment that have already begun making waves.
A Leap of Faith
Dr. Ceesay’s story began far from Milwaukee, in The Gambia, where she decided to pursue her dreams of higher education in the United States in 1989. Arriving with a scholarship from Fairmont State College in West Virginia, she embarked on a journey marked by resilience and determination. Despite the initial challenges, including a mix-up with her airport pickup that led her to book her own flight to Pittsburgh, Ceesay’s spirit remained unshaken.
After graduating with a degree in biology, Ceesay took a decade-long detour through work and family life before pursuing medical school. Balancing single parenthood and professional commitments, she eventually found her way to Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine in Chicago. Her journey from there to a prestigious residency at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin was marked by a blend of humor and humility, illustrating her unique approach to life’s challenges.
Embracing leadership
Ceesay’s role as the second board president of MMWC is a testament to her leadership and dedication. When the organization, which was founded in 1994 and became a nonprofit in 2010, split the roles of executive director and president, Ceesay was chosen to lead the board. Her predecessor, Janan Najeeb, had served in both roles for over a decade, setting a high standard for the organization.
“I didn’t lobby for the position but wasn’t hesitant about taking on the role,” Ceesay reflected. “Nobody tries to fill Janan’s shoes, but I saw the opportunity to learn a lot, and Janan would be right there. I’d have a great teacher.”
Ceesay’s vision for MMWC is both ambitious and heartening. Her goal is to contribute to an organization that profoundly impacts Milwaukee, and she is committed to learning and growing in this new role while continuing to foster the organization’s mission.

Personal Challenges and Triumphs
Ceesay’s personal journey is marked by significant achievements and challenges. Balancing her demanding career as a board-certified pediatrician with raising a son as a single parent, she has become a beacon of resilience and compassion. Her dedication extends beyond her professional life; her friends describe her as a steadfast companion who is always ready to lend a helping hand or share a moment of joy.
Her commitment to making a difference is not confined to Milwaukee. Ceesay’s dream of providing quality medical care to children in The Gambia is deeply rooted in her own experiences and observations. The inspiration came from a tragic story of a friend's child who, due to inadequate medical care, faced a dire situation that could have been prevented.
“I always wondered, ‘Why am I being given this opportunity?’” Ceesay shared. “It’s ingrained in me from my background and upbringing, and I know that to whom much is given, much is expected. I’ve always wanted to go back home and do something in the medical field.”
Building a Legacy
In 2019, Ceesay took a significant step towards realizing her vision by establishing the Maram Bobb Children Foundation. Registered in both Wisconsin and The Gambia, this foundation aims to ensure that no child in The Gambia dies due to a lack of medical care. The foundation will provide financial support, help families navigate the healthcare system, and collaborate with local hospitals and clinics to identify and aid at-risk children.
Dr. Ceesay’s leadership at MMWC and her dedication to the Maram Bobb Children Foundation illustrate her unwavering commitment to improving lives both locally and globally. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, compassion, and vision.
Fatoumata Ceesay’s journey from The Gambia to Milwaukee is a remarkable example of how dedication and hard work can lead to greatness and create meaningful change in the world. As she continues to lead and inspire, her legacy is one of hope and transformation for both her community and the world beyond.
